Music develops aural skills, musical literacy, computer composition and so much more. In addition to the school curriculum, we have a choir and a visiting tutor who teaches private keyboard lessons. Students are given many opportunities to perform in events such as assemblies, concerts and local community events.
Art develops the students' creativity and teaches them skills in using a range of media and different techniques in a dedicated art space. Students also learn to respond to a range of works by artists and have the opportunity to express themselves through different projects. Students are given opportunities to enter competitions, exhibit and participate in local community events.
The French program at Newham engages children in experimenting with language and developing intercultural understandings. We explore diverse French-speaking places - in Europe, Canada, West Africa and the Pacific. We love to sing, play games, do science experiments and take part in dramatic play in French.
Through active participation, the students develop personal and social skills such as cooperation, decision making, problem-solving and persistence during movement activities. The content enables students to develop and practise fundamental movement and motor skills required for effective participation in sports.
Sustainability is currently embedded in the curriculum at Newham PS with class teachers, the sustainability coordinator and visiting experts running special projects.
Sustainability at Newham PS covers areas such as energy saving, waste reduction, water conservation and biodiversity. Our students are developing environmental stewardship to improve biodiversity of flora and fauna through numerous projects such as revegetation along waterways and biolinks. The students also propagate, plant out, maintain and harvest vegetable seedlings for our kitchen garden. Our school currently uses the River Detectives program, monitoring our local waterway.
